Umbrella is our traditional and standard pay model. This payment model is for contractors who fall under SDC /single site workers and have no allowable expenses. Designed to be simple and easy to use, Umbrella suits contractors who carry out assignments for recruitment agencies and/or end clients.

What is Umbrella?

Once you register for Apex Umbrella, you become one of our employees.

We receive payment from your agency for the hours you have worked, from which we will make any necessary deductions, such as National Insurance, Income Tax, our margin and your pension contributions. Apex will then pay the relevant deductions straight across to HMRC, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The money you receive into your bank account is your take home pay.


Market-leading benefits

There’s no joining fee to register with Apex. Our competitive margin structure is quoted upon registration and is based upon your chosen payment option and the amount you earn. It’s also taken directly from the funds we receive from your agency before any other deductions are made, e.g. tax and NI contributions.

Umbrella employees are entitled to all employment benefits such as Holiday Pay, Statutory Sick Pay, Statutory Paternity Pay and Statutory Maternity Pay.

You’ll be kept up to date re your payments via SMS and email.

Continuity of employment

As a contractor you may have multiple end-clients. With Umbrella, however, we remain your employer from assignment to assignment. This continuity of employment will make it easier to get credit or apply for a mortgage.

Personal Accident

The personal accident insurance provided by Apex is designed to pay out compensation in the event of personal injury or death, provided this occurs as a result of an occupational accident (including your commute). Should the worst happen, you and/or your loved ones could be financially supported.

Public Liability

A ‘must have’ for anyone working as a contractor, public liability insurance covers compensation payments and legal costs in the event that you/your business injure or cause damage to another person, organisation or their property. This could include a member of the public, a client or a supplier etc. Apex provides public liability cover of up to £5,000,000.

Professional Indemnity

Professional indemnity insurance covers any compensation payments or costs that may be awarded should you be shown to have provided a poor quality of service which has, in turn, caused your client to lose out financially. It can also be called upon to cover any expenses and legal costs that may be accrued in your defence. Apex provide professional indemnity insurance up to the value of £5,000,000.

Employers Liability

Employers liability insurance is designed to cover any compensation payments and legal costs that may be incurred should an employee (current or former) sue an employer for injury or illness caused by their work. It’s a legal obligation for most organisations to hold this type of insurance. For work taking place in the UK Apex provides employers liability cover up to the value of £10,000,000. For offshore work and terrorism cover that figure is £5,000,000.

Products Liability

Products liability insurance is designed to cover any compensation payments payable to a third party in the event that a product you/your business designs, produces or supplies causes an injury. Apex provides products liability cover up to the value of £1,000,000.

Pension Scheme

After 12 weeks spent working with us, we automatically enrol you onto our chosen workplace pension scheme, The People’s Pension.
